Opening reception Friday, October 30

I'm proud to present an installation work titled Altered
Representing Gallery Villarte (Little Village, Chicago) and in collaboration with artists Rosy Torres and Roxana Licona.

Our installation piece explores the cultural perception and history of the Mexican Day of the Dead altar. We present not an altar, but its residue. Examining the origins, transformation and continuing development of this cultural tradition into contemporary life, we consider, What is new? What has been abandoned? We refer not solely to physical materials but also to it's intentions and sentiments. From somber to celebratory, assimilations and reinterpretations of the tradition are as diverse as the Mexican culture itself, as it spans throughout Mexico and the US.

Diálogo explores the contradictory roles that women
are expected to play in society with an installation that recreates
the home environment. The artists invite you to enter
this home and experience for yourself both the comfort
of home and the daily tension of living in two worlds
within one space.
